Oklahoma Families Engage State Superintendent Candidates at Family-Friendly Forum

Student-Centered Education Takes Center Stage as Candidates Face Voters

This past Sunday, more than 150 Oklahoma public charter school parents and their children gathered at Harding Charter Prep High School Sunday afternoon for an end-of-school celebration and candidate forum for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Between the face painting, the obstacle course, the open gym, and more pizza and popsicles than we knew what to do with, this celebration of Oklahoma families was filled with fun and connection.

The family-friendly event brought together State Superintendent Candidates, State Senator Adam Pugh, Representative Toni Hasenbeck, retired school superintendent Craig McVay, and Dr. Robert Franklin for a substantive conversation about education policy and specific issues that face parents of charter school students.

"We are grateful to the candidates who took time out of their weekend to connect with our parents on issues that matter deeply to Oklahoma families," said Barry Schmelzenbach, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Public Charter School Association. “Oklahoma’s charter schools rank sixth in the nation for overall quality and play a vital role in our state's public education system. Events like this help ensure that parents can engage directly with the leaders who will help shape education policy and opportunities for students in the years ahead.”

The non-partisan format created space for meaningful dialogue while welcoming students of all ages to enjoy the afternoon as well. Throughout the entire event the gym at Harding Charter Prep was filled with laughter as kids jumped on the inflatable and had a blast while their parents chatted with the candidates.

“It was important for me to be at this event because I have children that, this past year, have been in a public charter school,” said Harding Charter Prep Middle School parent Mikel King. I think the education system as a whole in Oklahoma needs better leadership and better representation for all kids, not just my kids. It was great to hear from all these candidates and learn more about them ahead of the June 16th primary election.”

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction oversees Oklahoma's public education system, including public charter schools. The primary to determine who will be on the general ballot in November will take place on Tuesday, June 16th.

We want to thank EVERYONE who attended our first in-person event! Join our mailing list and stay tuned for more fun events where you'll be able to connect with other charter school families.
